  • Rewrite the following sentences in the indirect speech and put the introductory verb from the main clause (in bold) in the passé composé. You can change the subject pronoun to a different pronoun of your choice. Make sure you are using the right tenses!
  1. Je t’explique : “Tu iras chez Mamie après-demain.”
  2. Nous avouons : “Nous avons déjà vu ce film le mois dernier.”
  3. Je t’assure : “Je ferai plus attention.”
  4. Tu me dis : “Nous ne t’aurions pas acheté de cadeau si on avait su que tu allais avoir de mauvaises notes.”
  5. Mes grands-parents nous racontent : “Quand il n’y avait pas de téléphone, quelqu’un allait chercher les secours en vélo.”

Using one of the platforms for finding a tutor or language exchange partner, practice the speaking activities below.

Partner Speaking Exercise:

  • Think about a speech or a conversation you have witnessed in the past – it could be a conversation from a film, a series or a podcast, or even a political speech. Describe to your partner what the main points of the conversation/speech were, using the indirect speech with the passé composé, and discuss the conversation/speech with them.

Independent Speaking Exercise:

  • Read this dialogue. Select at least five sentences from it, and put them in the indirect speech using the passé composé.

Example: La directrice a demandé à Sébastien s’il pouvait passer dans son bureau. Sébastien lui a répondu qu’il arrivait tout de suite.
