Mandarin Mosaic
Summary
Are you a Mandarin Chinese intermediate learner struggling with vocabulary and grammar structure? We have a resource that may come in handy.
Mandarin Mosaic is a sentence mining app that aims to make learning Mandarin Chinese more effective by teaching you words in the context of sentences. The main activity in a lesson is a clozed deletion test where a sentence is shown with a word blanked out, and you type in your guess using Chinese characters.
The app tracks your vocabulary and only shows sentences with one new word. The sentences are tailored to your level, making it easier to remember and use new words in context. Words that are unfamiliar to you are highlighted in blue, and you can mark a word as known or unknown. With the app’s ‘focus words’ feature, you can add words you’d like to focus on to a ‘focus words’ list and the app automatically generates a deck of sentences for these words. You can also create your own sentence packs that are relevant to you.
Mandarin Mosaic uses spaced repetition tracking to ensure long-term retention. It has an AI powered text-to-speech feature with realistic audio, as well as a built-in pop-up dictionary to provide the meaning and pronunciation of words. Additionally, there’s a cloud sync feature that enables you to sync your vocabulary and decks to your account so that you never lose your progress. If you use multiple devices, you can also sync your progress across devices.
Unlike similar resources such as Anki and Clozemaster, Mandarin Mosaic tracks your vocabulary and matches sentences to your current level, while also incorporating a realistic text-to-speech feature and hand selected images to help enhance your memory.
It takes a while for the app to be fully tailored to your level, and it isn’t suitable for beginners. However, if you wish to expand your vocabulary and get a better understanding of grammar structures, then Mandarin Mosaic is worth a try.
