An Honest Review of Rocket German With Image of German Castle

Rocket German Review & Why You Can’t Trust Online Reviews

Rocket German

Rating 3.3

Summary

Rocket German is a decent enough course, but it falls short of the high praise it often receives. The audio lessons aren’t bad, but they aren’t exceptional either, and the activities that are part of every lesson are too repetitive and boring. Nevertheless, it’s a fairly good course, with a nice structure, lots of clear grammar explanations, and opportunities for you to practice what you’ve learned. As such, this is a course that could potentially work for learners that are looking for a course with a very clear structure, lots of explanations, and a mix of audio and visual content. Learners that are after an engaging course, are on a budget, or want better cultural insights should probably look elsewhere.

Quality 3.5

Nicely designed interface with pretty good lessons.

Thoroughness 3.5

Lots of exercises, but they’re all very similar and repetitive.

Value 3.0

Pretty expensive for what you get.

I Like
  • Lessons use less English as you move up levels.
  • A nice balance between explaining grammar and pushing you to speak aloud.
  • Nice website and app design.
I Don’t Like
  • The exercises are too repetitive and rely on rote memorization.
  • The audio lessons don’t feel very natural and have lots of corny jokes.
  • The cultural lessons are short and uninteresting.
Price

$99.95 for level 1 and $249.95 level 1&2 with all 3 levels being $259.95.

If you read other reviews of Rocket German, you’ll find most are obnoxiously positive and hard to trust. Some of the websites claim that it’s the best course you’ll find, that it’s fun and just generally amazing.

An Honest Review of Rocket Portuguese With Image of Portuguese City

Rocket Portuguese Review – Not Quite Worth the Money or Time

Rocket Portuguese

Rating 3.0

Summary

Rocket Portuguese is an online Portuguese course made up of audio and reading lessons. The course currently covers one difficulty level, which claims to bring beginning learners of Brazilian Portuguese up to an intermediate level. Interactive audio lessons and repetitive exercises provide learners with lots of practice in a variety of skills, but some may find it difficult to justify the price with how monotonous the course is. The course would work best for learners at a low level that enjoy both audio and visual content, lots of explanations, and frequent practice activities. It probably isn’t the right resource, though, for those looking for an especially engaging way to learn or those on a budget.

Quality 3.0

The interface is clean and easy to use, but the voice recognition could work better.

Thoroughness 3.0

The course is structured fairly well, but exercises are overly repetitive.

Value 3.0

There are certainly resources that are better worth your time and money than Rocket Portuguese.

I Like
  • There are plenty of practice opportunities
  • There’s a slight gamification aspect to the course
  • Practice activities get you practicing a variety of skills
I Don’t Like
  • The lessons can be quite boring
  • Culture lessons don’t contain a ton of detail
  • It’s too expensive for what it offers
Price

Rocket Portuguese Level One is available for a one-time price of $149.95 or $27/month for six months.

The dashboard also features a progress bar that makes it easy to see if you’re meeting your study goals and a link to some other handy tools. It’s easy to navigate and intuitive, which is great.

Rocket French Review – Solid But Boring

Rocket French

Rating 3.7

Summary

Rocket Languages offers courses in a number of languages, some of which aren’t great, while others are pretty solid. Rocket French is neither amazing nor terrible, it’s pretty good. The content is structured well and gives you lots of opportunities to practice what you’ve learned. But, their lessons can be rather bland, with a large emphasis on rote memorization drills.

Quality 3.5

The lessons aren’t very exciting, but you’ll learn from them, and they’re designed well.

Thoroughness 4.0

The course structure is solid and includes lots of explanations.

Value 3.5

The price tag for the lessons is relatively high but justifiable.

I Like
  • The emphasis on speaking skills
  • The good mix of speaking and grammar focus found in the audio lessons
  • Leaderboard and streak system
I Don’t Like
  • It’s fairly expensive
  • The voice recognition isn’t reliable enough to depend on

The platform offers its users a wide range of lessons (in podcast format) that delve into Portuguese grammar and explore the rich culture of Brazil. Assimil

Rating 4.0

Summary

Assimil is a French company that has been selling language-learning resources since 1929. Assimil materials are available as books, CDs, and downloadable e-courses; there are a variety of available course types, and instruction is based on interacting with phrases in the target language. The popular Sans Peine or, With Ease, courses are for absolute or false beginners that would like to reach the B2 level, but we think you’ll need to incorporate some other study materials to make this happen.

Quality 4.0

The language materials are reliable, the audio is high quality, and the program is fairly easy to use after a bit of practice.

Thoroughness 4.0

Assimil is chock-full of explanations and thorough translations for all material, but you might need more to reach the advertised B2 level.

There are cheaper resources out there, but Assimil provides super solid instruction for the price.

An Honest Review of ELSA Speak With Image of London

ELSA Speak Review: Your AI English Pronunciation Tutor

ELSA Speak

Rating 4.3

Summary

ELSA, whose name stands for English Language Speech Assistant, is an AI-powered English pronunciation app and a serious contender for the position of your virtual pronunciation coach. It has a free and paid-for version, and is geared toward non-native English speakers who want to talk in a neutral American accent, improve their fluency, and speak with confidence.

Quality 4.0

It will effectively train you on 21 pronunciation skills, as well as syllable stress – although you’ll need to drill connected speech on your own.

Thoroughness 5.0

With 1400+ lessons, ELSA drills both your listening and speaking skills and has a natural progression from easy to difficult.

Value 4.0

ELSA is priced fairly for the value it provides.

I Like
  • You get instant automated feedback on your recordings, which includes feedback on mistakes and how you can improve.
  • It comes with a host of well-thought-out supporting features, including an Assessment, Dictionary, and Word Bank.
  • It has an extensive range of content, with four lesson types – listening, syllable stress, word pronunciation, and dialogue – covering 66 topics and 21 skills.
  • The app is intuitive and aesthetically appealing.
I Don’t Like
  • You can pass the syllable stress exercises even when you’re saying the wrong word. “PART-yada-yada,” for example, will get you full marks for “PARTnership.”
  • While it does a great job at drilling specific phonemes, the app doesn’t cover connected speech and contractions, which are important for a native-sounding accent.
  • Despite the variety of the content, the four lesson types become repetitive after a while.
Price

ELSA has a free version, but the premium one will give you access to the Dictionary and newly updated lessons.

There are three plans:

1. ELSA PRO: 1-month membership for $11.99  2. ELSA PRO: 3-month membership for $25.99  3. ELSA PRO: 1-year membership for $74.99

Use the code “ALRELSA” to get 10% off your subscription. The coupon is only valid if purchased from the link below and not from within the app.
