Tamil Script Learners Manual Mini Review: It Lacks Audio

Tamil Script Learners Manual

Rating 3.9
Price:

Free

Summary

At first glance, this 18-module Tamil script course hosted by the University of Texas looks like the perfect guide to the Tamil script. When you take a second look, however, you realize that you’ll need to use a supplementary resource alongside it. Let’s start with the good bits: the course (which is all in English) breaks down the alphabet in a clear and detailed manner. The pronunciation guides are impressively detailed. Each module also has a downloadable set of exercises. The handwriting worksheets are a clear and well-needed supplementary tool. Now for the bad part: despite giving lots of technical instructions about how to pronounce characters, there are no audio recordings. Beginners will struggle to know if they are pronouncing the characters correctly, especially if they don’t know what “raising the soft palate” or a “bilabial stop” means. The illustrated diagram of the speech organs isn’t of much help unless you’re already familiar with these terms. Our recommendation? Use the course, but not on its own.

Tamil Language In Context Mini Review: Great for Beginners

Tamil Language In Context

Rating 4.2
Price:

Free

Summary

This free 12-unit course is ideal for complete beginners, but it also has material suitable for intermediate learners. In fact, it’s designed to provide two years of study – although some of the later units are works in progress. Throughout the course, it will teach you listening, reading, writing, grammar, Tamil culture, and more. Each unit contains several lessons, exercises, and readings. Each lesson is further broken down into a Tamil-language video conversation, the script and its English translation, a  grammar guide, exercises, and cultural explanations. The website also contains a Tamil keyboard, guide to the Tamil vowels, and other supplementary resources. The site uses Flash, but as far as we can tell, it’s not necessary for any of the lessons. It’s not an HTTPS secure site, either – in fact, we would guess that this course pre-dates HTTPS by several years. But with many free online Tamil courses focusing mainly on English-language grammar-based explanations, Tamil Language In Context stands out for its emphasis on output and listening. Despite its dated appearance, it seems to be one of the best free beginner-level Tamil language courses online.

How to Learn Urdu Online: A Comprehensive Guide to Kickstart Your Urdu Learning

Ask most people what they think about Urdu, and they’ll tell you it’s a beautiful language – one of poetry, politeness, and history. Ask them how to study it, and they might shrug and point you to a poetry reading or TV show. If you’re lucky, they’ll have some advice for practicing the Urdu script Nastaliq.

Elhuyar Hiztegiak Mini Review: Best Basque Dictionary App

Elhuyar Hiztegiak

Rating 4.8
Price:

Free

Summary

Elhuyar Hiztegiak is a must-use app for studying Basque, no matter which language you’re learning from. It contains two-way Basque-English, Basque-Spanish, and Basque-French dictionaries. Each entry has example sentences as well as brief grammatical notes, related phrases, and expressions. It also has audio recordings for many entries. When searching in Basque, make sure to leave off the “a” suffix unless it’s an “organic a,” i.e. part of the noun itself. So, if you wanted to know the meaning of esnea, you’d search “esne” because the “a” in this word represents “the”. However, “animalia” needs the final “a”. Thankfully, a drop-down list of words appears as you type, so there’s not too much guessing involved. The app is fairly comprehensive, but you might struggle to find some words, especially if you’re searching in English. Before assuming the app doesn’t contain a word, however, double-check that you’ve set it to the right language – it’s a surprisingly easy mistake to make.

Darvazah Mini Review: A University-Level Urdu & Hindi Course

Darvazah

Rating 2.5
Price:

Free

Summary

Darvazah started off as A Door Into Hindi, before the Urdu-language version was launched. Both were funded by a grant from the US Department of Education and designed as a free equivalent to a year of Hindi- or Urdu-language tuition at a university level. They contain an alphabet tutorial and 24 video lessons. You’ll need to use Flash to watch A Door Into Urdu, however, while the videos for A Door Into Hindi are now only available on YouTube. The videos for the Hindi and Urdu courses are actually identical: the authors don’t distinguish between the two languages. Finding Hindi- and Urdu-language study materials can be hard, so a university-level course is a great option. However, we feel like it would be beneficial to have greater explanations of the differences between Hindi and Urdu. While grammatically and phonetically they could be considered the same language, Urdu has more Arabic, Persian, and Turkish vocabulary while Hindi owes more to Sanskrit.

Learn Icelandic Language – An Extensive Self-Study Guide For English Speakers

Icelandic isn’t the world’s most common language, but it is beautiful, fascinating, and worth the effort to learn. It will let you travel around one of the most beautiful countries on Earth (no, that’s not just my opinion), read Viking-era sagas and award-winning modern novels, and perhaps most importantly of all, make Icelandic friends.

Aamozish Mini Review: Learn the Urdu Script for Free

Aamozish

Aamozish

Summary

The sleekly designed Aamozish web app will teach you the Urdu script and pronunciation, and along the way, quite a bit of vocabulary. Don’t believe its claim that it will teach you Urdu in 7 days, however. You’ll learn the script, but there’s a lot more to the Urdu language than that.

The course consists of 26 modules divided into 10 units. You’ll be surprised by how quickly you progress: the modules fall under the category of micro-learning.

Each unit also contains quizzes. You don’t be able to move to the next unit until you’ve passed them, but that’s not hard. You only need to get two multiple-choice questions correct out of a total of four. In fact, it’s far too easy to get through the quiz without actually having learned the material – and, frustratingly, if you get a question wrong, Aamozish won’t tell you the right answer. I recommend using flashcards and other drilling methods alongside Aamozish.

This doesn’t mean Aamozish isn’t a useful Urdu-learning tool, though. The instruction is clear and thorough. Animations will show you how to draw the characters, while audio clips will help you with your pronunciation.

The rating is our best guess, but we haven’t yet had the opportunity to fully test and review this resource.

Struggling to remember how to conjugate vera or if there’s a difference between the indicative and subjunctive future perfect middle voice?
